Chemical Weapons Disposal at Anniston Currently, federal law does not allow for the transport of weapons across state lines. However, the Department of Defense is studying the possibility of shipment versus construction of new incinerators. Since the Army Chemical Materials Agency announced they were directed by DoD to study the transportation of chemical weapons, I have been extremely concerned about the long-term implications for the citizens of Anniston and surrounding areas. In the past, I was given assurances that the incinerator in Anniston would be used only for the destruction of weapons already in Anniston and once that work was complete, the facility would no longer be used. I am hopeful that the Department of Defense will keep its word. I will continue to do everything I can to ensure that additional nerve agents are not sent to Anniston. Accordingly, I am a cosponsor of S. 186, a bill that would ban the Pentagon from studying the transportation of chemicals. Click here to read Senator Shelby's newsletter about BRAC.
