Iraq While the search for weapons of mass destruction has ended and no such weapons were discovered, I remain committed to our nation's intervention in Iraq and the subsequent overthrow of Saddam Hussein. I believe that Saddam Hussein retained the knowledge, materials, means, and intent to produce weapons of mass destruction, and that he could have passed that knowledge on to our terrorist enemies. Like most Americans concerned about our troops, I eagerly await the day when our soldiers can return home from operations in Iraq and surrounding areas. I have confidence in our troops and their commanders. Accordingly, I trust President Bush and our military leaders to best determine when this mission is over and when to bring our troops home. The rebuilding of a fledgling democracy in Iraq that is stable, peaceful and free, has no doubt proven to be a difficult endeavor for our country. However, I firmly believe it is in our best national interest to promote order and stability in this volatile region of the world and to starve the intolerant forces of extremism and terror.
