Federal Marriage Amendment I am totally opposed to expanding the definition of marriage to include same-sex unions. As your United States Senator, I will only support legislation that I feel will strengthen the American family and support positive values for all of our citizens. I will not support legislation that undermines the moral and social values of our society. Accordingly, I am a cosponsor of S.J.Res. 1, which would amend the Constitution to state that marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union between a man and a woman. The amendment would also prohibit the Constitution or any state constitution, or state or federal law, from being construed to require that marital status or its legal incidents be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups. While the Senate did not act on similar legislation during the 108th Congress, I hope that my colleagues and I can work together to reconsider this amendment during the 109th Congress.
