Stem Cell Research

In August 2001, President Bush announced his support for federal funding of research conducted on 60 existing lines of embryonic stem cells which have the ability to regenerate themselves indefinitely. I support President Bush's decision to preserve the lives of unborn children while supporting research that may save lives. President Bush said, "We do not end some lives for the medical benefit of others...this is a matter of conviction, a belief that life...is biologically human, genetically distinct and valuable."

Since that time, a number of bills seeking to limit or expand stem cell research have been introduced in previous Congresses; none have garnered the support necessary to become law. On May 24, 2005, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, by a vote of 238-194. Sponsored by Representative Michael Castle, H.R. 810 seeks to amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for human embryonic stem cell research.

S. 471, introduced by Senator Arlen Specter on February 28, 2005, is the Senate companion to H.R. 810. This bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions where it awaits further action. Rest assured that I will be mindful of your concerns as these pieces of legislation move through the 109th Congress.
