Violence Against Women
I remain concerned about the problem of domestic violence in our country. The "Violence Against Women Act of 2005," S. 1197, reauthorizes the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) through Fiscal Year 2010, while setting new funding levels and adding new programs. S. 1197 passed the Senate by unanimous consent on October 4, 2005. In addition, H.R. 2862, the Departments of Commerce, Justice, and State, the Judiciary, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2006, addressed funding for the Victims of Crimes Act and grants to combat violence against women. Specifically, $371 million was appropriated to administer prevention and prosecution of violence against women programs in the Senate version of the bill. As Chairman of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations, I will continue to work to provide adequate funding for those programs that promote safe communities and crime reduction. I will continue to support appropriate measures that provide real safety and solutions for our communities. Congressional Research
